When you search for several words, it will search for pages which contain all those words on one page in any order (an AND search).
If searching a phrase, more than one word, please be aware that the search may yield separate words and rank them higher than your phrase. Thus ‘Great Northern Railway’ may appear a little further down the list than ‘Northern’ or ‘Railway’. The results will appear in reverse chronological order, the most recernt year first.
Search will look for both upper and lower case characters in the text irrespective of the case in which you enter the search keywords.
Search is looking for adjacent characters in one word, so if you search for car it will also find carriage, boxcar etc.
When searching for an organisation that has & in their name, search for the two names seperated by a space e.g. when searching for Somerset & Dorset simply search for Somerset Dorset
Do not use any of these punctuation characters in a search & or + or %
If you use any of these punctuation marks ) - ( : ; , . " ' ? ! @ £ $ it will treat them like any other character in a search. It will look for that character together with the adjacent characters in your keyword. For example a search for Somerset. will only find mentions of Somerset followed by a full stop. A search for Land-Rover will only find that precise spelling. Different results will be found by searching for Landrover than for Land Rover
When searching for large numbers, try searching with and without the "thousands seperator" eg 250,000 is different from 250000
If you see unexpected results, check there is no space before the first search word and only one space between each search word
