Britain led the world in so many areas of transport development, from railways to hovercraft. This means we have a great heritage to preserve and a great responsibility to preserve it. We see around us excellent work going on, but awareness of this heritage is not as wide as it needs to be if we are to preserve it.
As the only body that promotes transport preservation in all its forms - rail, road, air, water - we know how that there is so much more that could be done. Some of this work is urgent, with even “preserved” items at serious risk, particularly those exposed to our testing climate.
Since 1965 the Trust has been preserving Britain's heritage through
- giving restoration awards to individuals or groups to fund the last stages of specific projects
- making awards to recognise individual achievement – Preservationist of the Year, Young Preservationist of the Year and Lifetime Achievement awards
- making available loans at advantageous rates to restoration groups
- promoting a co-ordinated voice for transport preservation to government, and advising Heritage Lottery Fund
- sponsoring new restoration initiatives – for instance Brighton Belle
- highlighting sites of historical transport significance through our Red Wheel plaques
- organizing a varied visits programme for Trust members to transport heritage venues in UK and mainland Europe
- publishing a high-quality quarterly journal
- helping to ensure that significant libraries and collections are not destroyed for want of a home
