Draft Criteria for Stars
One Star:
Applicable to an organisation, event or entity starting to think about its impact on the environment and determined to set in train measures to transition to a more environmentally kind and sustainable one. In assessing the application portfolio, the Panel would above all be looking for top level commitment to the carbon reduction goal.
A successful portfolio would include evidence of the following:
- Energy, Low Carbon and Resource Efficiency: Is actively considering what operating procedures, processes and projects will need to be considered for change in order to reduce energy, water or resource consumption, recycling, and the use of renewable energy and projects in order to reduce carbon emission to nett zero by 2050
Plus at least two of the following:
- Social Value, Community and Heritage: Has clear plans to put in place operating procedures and projects focused on any of the social aspects of sustainability, including heritage, public access, community engagement and education
- Sustainable Construction and Maintenance: Has a firm corporate policy undertaking to consider new build and refurbishment projects that innovate in fields such as new materials or designs, resource management, reuse of historic buildings or climate resilience
- Sustainable Procurement: Has a firm set of policies procedures and projects to improve sustainability of equipment or services, management of supply chains or product life cycles
- Individual Achievement: Is establishing efforts to encourage individuals and groups of both staff and volunteers to place the emerging environmental challenge at the centre of all they do.
Two Star:
Applicable to an organisation, event or entity that is already aware of its impact on the environment and has already to set in train at least some measures to transition to a become more environmentally kind and sustainable and is particularly looking at bearing down on its carbon footprint. In assessing the application portfolio, the Panel would above all be looking for commitment to the carbon reduction goal across the organisation.
A successful portfolio would include evidence of the following:
- Energy, Low Carbon and Resource Efficiency: Has mapped the current carbon footprint and established operating procedures, processes and projects that will be enacted in order to reduce energy, water or resource consumption, recycling, and the use of renewable energy and projects in order to reduce carbon emission to nett zero by 2050
Plus at least two of the following:
- Social Value, Community and Heritage: Has clear plans and operating procedures and projects in place and underway focused on any of the social aspects of sustainability, including heritage, public access, community engagement and education
- Sustainable Construction and maintenance: Has demonstrated that new build and refurbishment projects incorporate climate friendly innovations such as new materials or designs, resource management, reuse of historic buildings or climate resilience
- Sustainable Procurement: Can demonstrate that it has procedures and projects to improve sustainability of equipment or services, management of supply chains or product life cycles
- Individual Achievement: Can show examples where individuals and groups of both staff and volunteers place the emerging environmental challenge at the centre of all they do.
Three Star:
Awarded to an organisation, event or entity that really knows what impact it is making on the environment and what it can do, and is doing to improve. In assessing the application portfolio, the Panel would above all be looking for quantified results in relation to the carbon reduction goal.
A successful portfolio would include evidence of the following:
- Energy, Low Carbon and Resource Efficiency: Has mapped the current carbon footprint and established operating procedures, processes and projects that will be enacted in order to reduce energy, water or resource consumption, recycling, and the use of renewable energy and projects in order to reduce carbon emission to nett zero by 2050, including consideration of the scale of carbon offset/capture which might be required over time.
Plus at least three of the following:
Four Star:
Awarded to an organisation, event or entity that not only knows what impact it is making on the environment, has set in train, is actively measuring and is prepared to demonstrate success. The organisation will know its irreducible carbon output and will have given due consideration to offset or capture strategies and be in a position to articulate that to those working on them. In assessing the application portfolio, the Panel would above all be looking results in relation to the carbon reduction goal.
A successful portfolio would include evidence of the following:
- Energy, Low Carbon and Resource Efficiency: Has mapped the current carbon footprint and established operating procedures, processes and projects that will be enacted and can already prove reducing energy, water or resource consumption, recycling, and the use of renewable energy and projects and is on track to reduce nett carbon emission by 78% by 2035 and nett zero by 2050 and has identified any requirements for carbon offset/capture
And most of the following:
- Social Value, Community and Heritage: Can demonstrate the success of environmentally sustainable plans, operating procedures and projects in place and underway focused on any of the social aspects of sustainability, including heritage, public access, community engagement and education
- Sustainable Construction and Maintenance: Has demonstrated that all infrastructure projects incorporate climate friendly innovations such as new materials or designs, resource management, reuse of historic buildings or climate resilience
- Sustainable Procurement: Has robust procedures and projects to improve sustainability of equipment or services, management of supply chains or product life cycles
- Individual Achievement: Can demonstrate a clear culture of individuals and groups of both staff and volunteers putting the emerging environmental challenge at the centre of all they do, and can back that up with examples.
Five Star:
Awarded to an organisation, event or entity that really knows what impact it is making on the environment and can demonstrate that it is on a pathway to nett zero by 2050. It will know exactly what its residual carbon output will look like and will have plans in place to ensure that what it produces in the long term can be offset or captured in order to reduce the nett output to zero. Across the board, top to bottom, carbon reduction and broader environmental and sustainability issues will be recognised without overly compromising the important task of preserving the past for the future.
A successful portfolio would include evidence of the following:
- Energy, Low Carbon and Resource Efficiency: Having mapped the current carbon footprint and established operating procedures, processes and projects have been enacted and can clearly show it is on track to reduce nett carbon emission by 78% by 2035, nett zero by 2050, has identified any requirements for carbon offset/capture and has made appropriate arrangements to do so.
And a convincing supporting portfolio encompassing all of the following:
