Stephen Middleton is well known in railway preservation circles for his meticulous restorations of vintage carriages but not many know that he and his family have also restored an ex-McAlpine Hudswell Clark Engine No88 - sister to Lady McAlpine's No31. Sir William would have been so thrilled to see the two engines together again at Fawley Hill at the award ceremony - it hauled vistors, including Princess Anne, up the famous Fawley Hill railway, the steepest incline on a full gauge railway. Sir William would definitely have approved of HIS award going to a man who does so much amazing work to preserve so much Heritage Rail stock.
