The Lancashire & Yorkshire line from Huddersfield to Sheffield joined the Manchester, Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway at Penistone station, immediately after leaving the 29 arch Penistone Viaduct. This viaduct was built by Sir John Hawkshaw in 1850 and resembles Lockwood, though at 30 m. (98 ft.) it is not as high and is also shorter.
At Denby Dale Sir John Hawkshaw built a third viaduct for this line. Due to a strike by stone-masons and in order to save money it was built with timber. It lasted until 1847 when it was blown down in a gale. A second timber viaduct replaced it and lasted until 1880, when the present stone structure was built.
The viaduct is a Grade II Listed Structure.
