When the Eastern counties Railway built its branch to Maldon, the Deputy Chairman was MP for Maldon. It has been said that in order to improve his chances of re-election he instituted major employment in order to encourage voters and this station was the means to provide it.
This story though attractive seems unlikely as most labourers would not have enjoyed the franchise at that time. Whatever the real reason, the result is an unusually extravagant but attractive building for such a minor branch railway. With large Dutch gables, a nine bay arcade across the front, a cast iron imitation stone balustrade, and tall stone mullion windows, it looks a worthy residence for the MP himself.
When the railway closed in 1964, the building was saved from demolition. It is now in commercial use.
