About Kinclaer Viaduct, Pinmore

This viaduct was built on a line promoted by the Girvan & Portpatrick Junction Railway in 1865 and completed in 1877. Its main object was to shorten the rail route from Glasgow and central Scotland to Ulster and Belfast. Before this line's construction the rail route to Stranraer and Portpatrick from Glasgow had been in excess of 150 miles. The railway became a main trunk route, although it remained single-track for almost all its length.

Just to the south of Pinmore tunnel, single track and 496 m. long, and the former station at Pinmore, the railway passes over the impressive stone 11 arch Kinclair/Kinclaer viaduct with a maximum height of 24 m (80 ft.). It is built on a gentle curve from a rough stone which suits the rugged terrain which faces this little known railway.
