Fro a relatively small city, Hereford has had a complex railway history. It started with the Shrewsbury & Hereford approaching from the north and establishing a station at Barr's Court, on the eastern side of the city. At the same time the Newport, Abergavenny & Hereford approached from the south and built a station at Barton on the west side. The Hereford, Hay & Brecon built a station, Moorfields, near Barton, and the lines from Worcester and Ross on Wye both used Barr's Court. Complex link lines were built in an attempt to overcome the inconvenience, but it was not until 1893 that Barton was finally closed and all activity focussed on Barr's Court.
T M Penson who built a number of stations in the Welsh Marches designed a station for Hereford which gave a suitable entry to a cathedral city, Tudor in style with Gothic windows and large gables, a fine example of mid-Victorian secular architecture.
