This little station is of interest because for some two and a half years it was the junction station for the main line of the Birmingham & Derby Junction Railway. It opened in 1839 from Derby through Burton, Tamworth and Whiteacre and joined the London & Birmingham at Hampton. It thus provided the first direct link between the East Midlands and London.
A joint station was built at Hampton south of the junction on the north side of the tracks. It was a single storey building with a hipped roof, overhanging eaves and a large bay window looking out onto on the platform. In 1842 the link between Whiteacre and Birmingham was completed and so Hampton lost some of its traffic, and within a year the route had been reduced to a single track.
Hampton had suffered another drawback in 1840 when the rival Midland Counties Railway completed a line from Derby direct to Rugby, further south than Hampton on the London & Birmingham, and thus producing a shorter route to London. The amalgamation of these two companies to form the Midland Railway in 1844 spelt the end. The route became a siding and as such survived until 1952 when the track was removed.
There is still a station at Hampton, but the old station is in private hands, though still identifiable.
