About Halifax Station

The original station was built at Shaw Syke, approximately 200 m west of the current location and opened in 1844 by the Manchester & Leeds Railway as the terminus of a branch off their main line from Manchester to Normanton. This was then extended and used as a goods depot prior to the building of a new railway station building at the current site.

This was designed by Thomas Butterworth and opened in 1855, some five years after the completion of the line onwards to Bradford. It is a long single storey building in ashlar stone, with a central pediment and a classical portico of fine proportions. It is a Grade II listed building and now houses the nursery associated with the Eureka! Children's Museum.

From 1890 the station was known as Halifax Old Station, to distinguish it from Halifax St. Paul's and Halifax North Bridge stations. In 1951 the name was changed again to Halifax Town, and in 1961 it reverted to Halifax.

By road: Off A69 in the centre of Halifax.

By rail: Adjacent to Halifax Railway Station
