Sir William Tite's Italianate station which formed the nucleus of a town which grew into a railway workshop centre.
Eastleigh Station, Southampton Road, Eastleigh, SO50 4FL
This station was known as Bishopstoke when first built in 1841. Its purpose was to serve a junction on the London to Southampton Railway where the branch to Fareham and Gosport diverged. It lay in what was then open country. Sir William Tite was engaged to build it and he designed a characteristically handsome building, mildly Italianate in style, similar to other of his stations on this Railway. It bears one of his hallmarks in the form of chimney stacks grouped under a continuous dentilled cornice.
Starting in 1891, the carriage and locomotive works of the LSWR were moved from Nine Elms to Bishopstoke and a town started to grow around it. The name was changed to Eastleigh after a local manor. As the station grew in importance, another track was laid along the front of the building and a new entrance was built in 1893. The original thus became part of an island platform. In 1987 the extra track was removed, the additional entrance building was demolished, and the old building was restored to its its original function.
The locomotive works south of the station are now private property.
