About Charlbury Station

The Oxford, Worcester & Wolverhampton Railway was for a time closely allied to the Great Western. During that period Brunel was engaged in some of the building work.

At Charlbury an inexpensive solution was required and Brunel obliged with a charming Italianate chalet style of building. Constructed with timber and with a large overhanging hipped roof, it is distinctive and charming. Restored in 1979, together with the early station nameboard it is a Grade II Listed Building.

The OW & W Railway, known not very affectionately as the 'Old worse and worse' eventually became part of the West midland Railway in 1860, whence it joined the GWR in 1863.

By road: Off A44, via B4437.

By rail: from Oxford or Worcester.
