The Rumney Railway was a 1271 mm. (4ft. 2 ins.) gauge tramroad which brought coal down the 35 km. (22 miles)from Rhymney to the Monmouthshire Tramroad, just east of Newport. It was taken over by the Brecon & Merthyr Railway in 1863. In Bassaleg where there was at one time a station, the tramroad crossed the river Ebbw on a four arch stone viaduct. In spite of its good proportions and great age, it is neither listed nor scheduled as an Ancient Monument.
By road: Visible from the A467, a better view is obtained from Station Approach or Forge Mews, off the Caerphilly Road, A468.
