About Avon Aqueduct, Linlithgow

The Avon Aqueduct is on the Union Canal near Linlithgow, West Lothian, Scotland, UK. (see also entry for the Almond Aqueduct). It is 250 m.(810 ft.) long and 26 m.( 86 ft.) high. It is the longest and tallest aqueduct in Scotland, and the second longest in Britain (after the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct in Wales). It can be viewed from Muiravonside Country Park.

The aqueduct was built after the design by Thomas Telford for the Chirk Aqueduct. There are twelve arches, and the water is carried in a cast iron trough. There is a towpath along both sides.
