The first production hovercraft, the SR.N1, made its maiden Channel crossing in June 1959. SR.N1 itself is now part of the Science Museum's reserve collection at Wroughton.

The former HMS Daedalus site at Lee-on-Solent is home to the world's only hovercraft museum. This houses a collection of 60 full size craft and the largest hovercraft archive and library in the world, but is normally only open to the public by appointment.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary the museum is planning its best-ever Hovershow on 24-27 July 2009. For details see here.
