Visit to Somersetshire Coal Canal – Thursday 6th July 2023

A visit has been arranged for members and guests to the Somersetshire Coal Canal Society which is restoring the canal originally built to carry coal from the Paulton and Radstock coalfields to the Kennet & Avon Canal.

To give an idea of the background of the canal and what you’re likely to see during our visit, please look at their site:- http://www.coalcanal.org/
We will meet at Brassknocker Basin, Monkton Combe, near Bath, BA2 7JD, which is located just off the A36. Whilst there is parking available, it is limited and we will probably share cars from there to allow us to visit other locations along the canal.

The visit will comprise a guided tour lasting up to 3 hours and refreshments and toilet facilities will be available at Brassknocker Basin.

Here is the likely itinerary:-
• Meet at Brassknocker at 11am for tea and introductory talk
• Lift share to Midford to see canal, aqueduct and contractor's railway site
• Continue to Combe Hay Locks for lunch break (sorry no refreshments on site, so bring your own supplies)
• Visit lock flight
• Visit contractor's railway site
• Return to cars at Brassknocker

Please contact alan.wallwork@nationaltransporttrust.org.uk to register your interest and book your place.

There is no charge for this visit, but the Society would appreciate a donation towards the upkeep of the Canal and its associated facilities.
