2010 Transport Trust Award Ceremony

Transport Trust

Each year the Trust hosts a ceremony at which our annual awards - Preservationist of the Year, Young Preservationist of the Year, Lifetime Achievement Award - as well as project Restoration Award certificates - are presented by our patron, HRH Prince Michael of Kent.

The Roundhouse

The 2010 ceremony took place in June at the Roundhouse, a fabulous grade II listed building in Chalk Farm.

The event was preceded by an unveiling ceremony for a Red Wheel plaque marking the significance of the building. A roundhouse with turntable in the centre was fashionable in the early days of railways. Built in 1847 for the London and Birmingham Railway, Chalk Farm served only a few years as a running shed as larger engines were introduced that could not fit the turntable, relegating it to a store until WW2.

The Roundhouse had a further lease of life in the 1960's as a performing arts venue, hosting acts including The Doors and Jimi Hendrix. After performances ceased in 1983, the building was left to decay until it was purchased by Sir Torquil Norman in 1996 and turned over to a new Roundhouse Trust. It reopened in 2006 as a performance space and creative centre for young people.
